Snowshoe walk at the Bresse-Hohneck
05/03/2022
Before the snow meltsThe start of the walk, about 7km long, is not far from the Bresse-Hohneck station. To find it, you will have to go to the roundabout upstream.
If you look up and see small signs with snowshoes on them, that's a good sign! Let yourself be guided and follow them.
The directions are very clear, no risk of getting lost.
You will see it more or less on the pictures of this article, we chose to go at the end of the winter season. The advantage is that this outing was free (except for the rental of snowshoes beforehand). The disadvantage is that the snow was missing in some places. We started our walk with the snowshoes in hand until we had gained enough altitude to find the much sought-after snow.
The circuit first took us near the Vologne chairlift, then along the Bas Chitelet path. From this path we could enjoy a view on the red Chitelet slope and then a view on the blue and red Goulet slopes.
Continuing the walk we passed over the Col de Thiaville (1120m) and then directly to the foot of the slopes seen earlier in the distance.
This is an opportunity to walk a few hundred metres on groomed snow which is also used by skiers wishing to move from one piste to another.
Once past the Chitelet tracks, we quickly reach the forest again. As it is essentially downhill, we find ourselves obliged to take off our snowshoes and carry them by hand to finish our walk and reach the starting point. As it was time for lunch (almost 2pm), we jumped on a chairlift to gain height again and reach the Schmargult inn.
Unfortunately for us, other people had the same idea more quickly and they all robbed the place before we got there. We salivated at the list of dishes on the menu while queuing for almost an hour, but were forced to settle for a pair of barely warmed up knacks with a few fries when it was our turn to order. Not enough to warm us up properly anyway, it was the small disappointment of the day.
We take advantage of the fresh air before going back to the chairlift to take it down. By the way, it's very surprising to take it down, the feeling was strange.
To conclude this walk, we were too late to go for this walk because the snow had partly melted, which broke our enthusiasm for this activity and unfortunately the wait and the quality of the meal could not counterbalance this time.
Nevertheless, it's also part of the game to come at the wrong time, and in my opinion, this outing should be repeated without hesitation when the snow has fallen in abundance!
