Connemara lakes

Date 21/10/2023

Is there more than one?

I thought, certainly naively, that we were talking about the Connemara lake. To me, there was only one. Well... we're talking about the lakes of Connemara, because we're talking about the lakes in the Connemara region. This region of Ireland offers a multitude of landscapes as surprising as they are magical.

Lough Inagh

We chose this lake. We pull into a parking lot adjacent to the viewpoint.

This is our first interaction with Irish sheep. The locals have set up a sort of small cupboard in which they store doses of food for the sheep. Based on trust, and in exchange for a few coins, it's possible to take a box. And the sheep understand this very well. They know how to show us where the grain is.

You can feed the sheep in exchange for a coin.

The viewpoint is only a few dozen meters below us. We're treading Irish soil for the first time, and what a surprise! It's as if we're walking on carpet, the ground cushions our footsteps so well. It almost makes you want to roll around in the grass and take a nap! Except that.... except that the sheep have been here. And the grass they ingest has to come out somehow. Have you got it?

The place is very quiet. Although it's a well-known viewpoint, we were lucky enough to be the only ones there when we stopped. But... the calm didn't last long. We had the misfortune to see a whole bus stop just after us. That's the game, you might say.

Luckily, the tourists didn't stay long, giving us another opportunity to appreciate the magic of this place even more intensely. We went down to water level to enjoy it even more. And... what a slap in the face!

The water is so calm that it resembles a giant mirror.

Every tree, every rock, every blade of grass is reflected in the water. It's very disturbing because it gives the illusion that this place is twice as big.

All in all, the sense of calm, tranquillity and soothing is combined at the lakeside. You feel serene on the spot. I even found myself breathing less and less rapidly, but more and more deeply. Bim, first Irish slap!

Why first? As you'll see from the next few articles, this is just the first taste.
