Need a refresh? If you're looking for a getaway that combines adventure, nature and serenity, the "Cascade du Hohwald" in Alsace is the destination for you. Whether you call it "Cascade de l'Andlau", "Cascade du Hohwald" or "Cascade du Kreutzweg", it's really the same waterfall. To put it all together... let's say it's the Cascade du Hohwald, located at “le Kreuzeg”, fed by a river called the Andlau.
At an altitude of 700 metres, this waterfall promises a breath of fresh air and a breathtaking panorama. This hidden treasure, nestled in the heart of the Alsatian forest, is the perfect place to get away from it all and reconnect with nature. We start our walk on a path upstream from the waterfall.
To reach the waterfall, an 800-metre-long path awaits you, winding its way up through dense green forest. This short hike, which takes around 10 minutes from the parking lot, is accessible even to the less athletic. Non-athletes will also appreciate the relatively easy route, allowing them to take full advantage of the surrounding beauty without tiring themselves out too much.
Along the way, let yourself be enchanted by the splendor of the forest. The majestic trees and birdsong create a magical atmosphere, making every step a pleasure. But don't forget your walking shoes for a comfortable, safe hike on this picturesque trail if the weather isn't cooperating.
Nature lovers will also appreciate the fact that the trail can be walked with a dog, allowing our four-legged friends to enjoy this great adventure too. However, it's important to note that the trail isn't too accessible to people with reduced mobility, which may limit the visit for some.
Compared with other waterfalls in the region such as the Nideck, the Hohwald waterfall is much more accessible. Its location in the middle of the forest and in the heart of nature makes it a privileged destination for those seeking tranquillity and escape. Once there, you'll be rewarded with an impressive view of the Hohwald waterfall.
If you want to enjoy the site a little longer, a picnic table below the waterfall invites you to take a well-deserved break. You can enjoy your meal while contemplating the soothing spectacle of the water tumbling over the rocks.
In summer, the waterfall's icy waters provide a welcome refreshment, transforming this spot into a veritable haven of coolness, both for the feet of the brave who wade in, and for the paws of our furballs. Whether you're planning a day trip or a picnic in the heart of nature, the Hohwald waterfall is an experience not to be missed!
