An old Venetian cityOur tour of the city begins at the old Venetian port.
The Egyptian lighthouse stands proudly in the middle of the harbour. Built in 1830, it is probably the most famous monument in the city.
We progress through the city until we come across the Rimondi Fountain in Petychakis Square. This beautiful public fountain is built of limestone.
Water flows from the mouth of each of the three lion heads. A visit was compulsory, and a photo was a must.
The minaret of the Neratze Mosque can be seen from the different streets of the city. This mosque is the largest in the city. Nowadays it is used as a concert hall.
As is often the case in Crete, cats are king, so don't be surprised to see them here and there basking in the sun. These two, for example, used to sit at the entrance to the fortress.
Located on the hill of Paleokastro, this fortress is huge (nearly 1400m²). It is said to be so large that it could house all the inhabitants of the city.
If you visit it, it will offer you a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the sea.
