Agiofaraggo Beach
17/05/2019
A beach at the end of a canyon!Among the beaches that are worth visiting is Agiofaraggo Beach. The access is not easy but the reward is at the end.
To get there, we passed in front of the Odigìtria monastery. We had a little break there, I invite you to read the dedicated article. Until the monastery the road is tarred... but to reach the beach it's another story! No more tar, just dirt. We take (with our makeshift 4x4 let's remember) a barely graded road. The progress is slow. Even very slow from time to time.
During our descent, we have the bad surprise to find ourselves in front of a fence which blocks our way. A bit surprised, we take a few minutes to check that our GPS has not played a joke on us. After checking, it was the right way. We pushed the fence aside just long enough for the car to pass, closed it behind us and a few dozen meters later we discovered why a fence was closing the road.
We are in the middle of an enclosure in which goats are flourishing. They are everywhere. On the trees, nestled in the cliffs or simply at the foot of the trees. The sight of goats around us makes us even more doubtful about the road we are taking. The path takes us through 2-3 fords. I remind you that we are driving a Citroën C1 at this point.
Panic starts to get to us because the road is not really adapted to this type of vehicle, it is not really possible to turn back, and we still don't know what the next surprise will be. We continue however, until we arrive in front of a kind of makeshift parking, and especially in front of another fence. Phew.
We naively think that the ordeal is over, that the beach is near and that we have arrived. But no, we still have a 30 minute walk ahead of us.
Time to prepare our backpacks, and here we go again, leaving our vehicle to rest.
The landscapes are lunar until the beach! The path passes in the middle of a canyon. The cliffs that surround us are several dozen metres high. We pass between rocks, olive and laurel trees, following the river bed that flows into the ocean. Once again we meet goats that have taken up residence in the area.
At the end of the road, almost at the beach, we pass the small chapel of Agios Antonios.
A few metres further on, the beach finally comes into view. The place is very very isolated and very quiet. Only a few other adventurous tourists chose to frequent the place like us and spread their towels.
On our side it was time for lunch. We take our break to the sound of the waves crashing on the pebble beach, happy to discover this mini paradise.
If you love silence, peace, adventure and walking this place is perfect for you!
We left with a lot of memories! The return journey was made in the same conditions (short walk, goat pen, winding road, fords).
And then... how can I describe to you the joy of being back on the tarmac, and the pleasure of being able to shift into 3rd gear by car?
What about you?
