The castles of Ramstein and Ortenbourg
04/05/2021
Two imposing ruins a few dozen meters from each other. For this Sunday walk, I take you this time to the side of Scherwiller to see more closely the Ramstein castle, then the Ortenbourg castle. The start of the walk is a few dozen meters from the Hühnelmühle inn. I invite you to park on the parking lot of this inn for more convenience.
If you like nature, you will be delighted. You will have to walk about 20 minutes to reach the Ramstein castle. The place is very buccolic.
During your progress, you will pass by a small brick house where lizards love to bask in the sun.
I cannot explain the history of this building. If you know it, do not hesitate to contact me to indicate it to me, I will be happy to transmit it.
A few minutes of walking later, we are at the back of the Rocher des Corbeaux (former name of the Ramstein castle).
This castle, below the Ortenbourg castle, was historically considered to have been built to attack it.
The keep is partly collapsed and there is not much left of it.
At the risk of repeating myself when I speak about monuments of this size, one feels very... very... very small when one is at the foot of the castle. This feeling is even more accentuated since it is located on a rocky peak, at 437m of altitude.
The path, which is very well marked, will take you around the castle, and will lead you to the entrance. You can then access the second level by taking a staircase. For people with four-legged animals, be warned that the footbridge is metal, and that they may have difficulty walking alone.
The place is quiet. In summer you will certainly meet other people who come here to picnic or to relax. We can't resist the urge to go around every window to admire the view. Again, the 32m high dungeon is unfortunately not visitable.
In summary, this walk is really very pleasant to do. It is not easy, it is true, and requires a good condition, but you will certainly be as pleasantly surprised by the views as we were.
It is always a pleasure to go back in time and in history by walking along the small paths that lead to these monsters that dominate the valleys, mainly in Alsace.
